truffle tree planting in England
We are made of many thousand of different worlds you shorty discover when you travel through England with a purpose or destination like a pigeon on route to deliver its message ringed up on its foot
The orchard , sympathetic planting to an existing Eco systems of mycelium they all require feet marching on the ground and a great input of the person's living and working there also hopefully some knowledge from a hunter with his dogs.We need information above ground and below so our truffle castles will not be invaded by the brumale tribes and flourish
more pratical
The hazel in Hampshire planted traditionally not with any truffle infection to roots will in the hopefull setting produce truffle natural in 10 years
In my experimental orchard at home with infected hazel planted at 5 x 3 m spacing approx with regular spoor infection and addition of wood chip also sympathetic sub soiling to aerated ground below and encourage insect life has produced in 8 years
It might not be an advantage producing any earlier if we want long established woodland producing over generation of lifetimes (ref t the uncimatum / aestivum )
Beech so far no study that I know of recorded but I expect 18 years plus before production starts
Hornbeam is a tree for forestry we are all planting with is characteristics possibly suited to the future climate and support the beech . We don't know ( I don't know ) how quickly this will produce currently trees in England infected infected with truffle planted up to 5 years ago , I would imagine perhaps 14 years and more . ( very simelar to the beech ) Certainly in its wild state I have only experience of hunting under them at 20 years plus
In Spain we are told the hazel has stopped being used for nut production with climate change and also the common oak in France for uncinatuum / aestivum planting
here in the Uk currently I am in favour of the hazel and common oak mix as a planting to establish the native truffle alongside the hornbeam , lime and others also now experimenting with negra pine and atlantic cedar especially help establish the orchard
We are always learning and every site different and most importantly taking advice fro those living on site and their understanding of the landscape
